Boat Name Generator - 1,000+ Ideas, Instantly
Twenty-two categories nobody else bothered to write — double meanings, deadpan one-liners, anagrams, head scratchers, pontoon-dad energy, slightly haunted. Every name gets a radio-call test and a transom-width estimate. When one sticks, we cut it in Evansdale from $29.
How to actually pick one
Four tests, in order of how much they will matter later. The generator runs the first three for you.
- Say it as a radio call. “Mayday, mayday, this is Wet Couch” is a sentence you may one day have to say to the Coast Guard in front of your family. Click any name to see how it reads on channel 16.
- Spell it over the radio. If it needs spelling twice, it is too clever. Short and phonetic wins. The deliberately-misspelled category is funny on the dock and a full-time job on the VHF.
- Count the characters. At 4 inches tall each character takes about 2.5 inches of width, so a 22-character name runs over five feet. The estimate is on every card — measure the transom before you fall in love.
- Check it is not already on your lake. There is exactly one Serenity per marina and it is awkward for everybody. That is the whole reason the weird categories exist.
Renaming a boat
Sailors will tell you renaming is bad luck unless you hold a ceremony that involves telling Poseidon in writing and pouring champagne into the water. Practically: remove every trace of the old name first — logbooks, life rings, the lot — then apply the new one. Our removal guide covers getting the old vinyl off without hazing the gelcoat.
If the vessel is USCG documented, the name is on the certificate and you have to file to change it. State-registered boats have no such paperwork — the name is decoration and you can change it on a Saturday.
Questions people actually ask
Is the boat name generator free?
Yes, and there is no email wall. Spin it as long as you like. We make money when you decide to put one on the boat.
Can I use a boat name someone else already has?
On a state-registered boat, yes - boat names are not registered or protected, and there are hundreds of boats called Serenity. On a USCG documented vessel the name goes on the certificate, and the Coast Guard will not document two vessels with the same name and hailing port.
How much does a boat name decal cost?
From $29 including shipping. Most transom names land between $29 and $79 depending on finished size.
How many characters fit on my transom?
Rough maths: at 4 inches tall, each character takes about 2.5 inches of width including spacing. A 10-character name runs about 25 inches. Send us a photo with a tape measure in it and we will lay it out properly.
Are these boat names family friendly?
PG-13. Nothing here will get you a conversation with the marina manager, but a couple will get you a look from your mother-in-law.
